It has been almost ten years since katrina and it had me wondering about what has gone on. The AP did an Article on one woman who died and layed on the sidewalk for days. It brought back those horrific memories and the good many did which I documented on this site. I don't know if anyone is still around that received updates from this site but here is one update for posterity;

NEW ORLEANS 8/19/2015; Amid the chaos after Hurricane Katrina swamped New Orleans, Vera Smith's body decayed for four days on a sidewalk until her horrified neighbors covered her with dirt, a makeshift plastic shroud and a bleak epitaph: "Here lies Vera. God help us."

Broadcast to the world, the stark image came to stand for what seemed like the complete breakdown of a great American city.

Although her cremated remains were later buried on a family plot in Texas and the place where she died of unknown causes has sprung back since Katrina, Vera Smith remains part of her neighborhood.

A colorful memorial by local artist Simon Hardeveld stands beside an upscale restaurant built near the site of her death, and her all-too-public demise was recounted in a book written by a man who helped erect her temporary sidewalk tomb.

Ten years later, friends; as well as neighbors who never even met Elvia Briones Smith, her full name — sense that she could have been any of them, a tragic victim of a natural disaster compounded by human mistakes.
"Vera is still being remembered every day. Even those of us who didn't know her think of her as a symbol of the quiet suffering people endured," said Yvette Rutledge, whose shop, Mystic Blue Signs, is around the corner from where Smith died.

Artist Maggie McEleney, who assisted with Smith's roadside burial, had a flashback recently after the death of a kitten.

Burying the little creature overwhelmed her senses.
"It was because of that thing that happened back then," said McEleney, referring to Smith's demise and gruesome public display obliquely, in the most distant of terms.
Wealth and poverty live side by side in New Orleans, and Smith lived somewhere in between. Her old neighborhood has undergone a rebirth since the storm, with trendy new businesses, residential renovations and new housing, but back then it was rundown and plagued by crime.

Born in Mexico, Smith grew up in Texas and moved to New Orleans as a young woman decades before Katrina. Four marriages produced two daughters, now grown. For her final 15 or so years, Smith shared a small duplex with common-law husband C.N. Keene and their dogs. Their home was on Philip Street, just a few blocks from the columned mansions of St. Charles Avenue and a rough housing project that was demolished after the hurricane.

For years, her two daughters said, Smith helped operate a restaurant and bars even as she struggled with alcohol. A true New Orleans character, she loved fancy clothes and costume jewelry and had a wig for each day of the week.
"She never had the same hair color two days in a row," said daughter Cindy Briones, 57. "You always knew when she was coming."

Neighbors knew Smith as a quirky, boisterous woman who could be jolly and friendly. She also could be obnoxiously loud if she had been drinking, which they say happened often. "She wasn't living a pristine life and she didn't care if you knew it," said Jewel Carbone, who was once married to Smith's second husband.
While thousands evacuated New Orleans as Katrina bore down on the city, Smith and Keene stayed. Sometime after the hurricane made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, Smith walked outside and headed around the corner toward a store where she often bought food, cigarettes and beer.

Keene never saw Vera alive again; he was told she had been killed by a vehicle that struck her in the aftermath of the storm and sped away. Neighbors still believe she was struck by a car, but an autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press last week showed she had no injuries to indicate any sort of accident. The report doesn't list a cause of death, and the manner was undetermined. Her death remains a mystery.
In an interview with the AP shortly after her death, Keene — who died himself in 2007 — said he put a bedspread over his companion's body on the sidewalk and left it, feeling there was nothing else he could do.

A few days later, he was sitting on his porch when a man came up to him with news.

"Some guy I didn't even know named John came by and said, 'I've just buried Elvira in the park,'" Keene said.
That man was John R. Lee, who lived nearby. Riding his bike four days after Katrina, Lee was sickened to see her decaying remains lying on the curb in 90-degree heat.
"I couldn't believe it. Aside from being a health hazard, it was just such an indignity to the body," he said.
Much of the city was underwater because of levee failures, but Smith's resting place on the sidewalk was dry. So Lee grabbed a shovel the next morning and began covering her remains with dirt from a small, nearby park. A handful of others saw what he was doing and joined in, he said.
Lee and others draped the mound of dirt with thick white plastic and outlined the makeshift grave with bricks. It was Maggie McEleney, Lee said, who painted the words on the shroud that touched the world.

Images of the forlorn shrine were published worldwide.
Only then did Smith's relatives learn of her fate.
Daughter Jeannette Diver of Flint, Michigan, recalls her mom having parties during some previous hurricanes, and she suspects Smith thought she and Keene could survive Katrina, too. Diver said she tried calling her mother the day after the storm made landfall. When she couldn't reach her, she knew something was wrong.
"I haven't stopped mourning," she said. "It's like it happened yesterday."
The hurt was compounded by the fact that some people assumed Smith was homeless and unloved because her remains stayed in the street so long, when nothing could be further from the truth, Diver said.

"She was loved by many. She owned restaurants and bars and she raised me," Diver said. "She's not haunting that corner. Her spirit is here with me."

Briones, Smith's other daughter, said losing Miss Vera sent Keene into a depression from which he never recovered. After he died, Smith's close friend and landlord, Leona Gray, soon passed away as well.

"Mama used to cook for her, clean for her, just do everything. She really took care of both of them," Briones said. "(Her death) just took them both."

John Lee remained troubled by nightmares and insomnia. In 2006, to help exorcise his own demons, he wrote and self-published a book called "Our Sleepless Nights: Surviving Katrina and Burying Miss Vera."
"It was a cathartic release to chase away the nightmares," he said.

Lee, who has an educational software business, said writing the book helped "a lot," yet he still gets emotional recounting his Katrina experiences and the decision to leave nine days after the storm. As he described the hell of the hurricane during a recent interview, he burst into tears.

McEleney processed her trauma through her art. In the months after Katrina, her paintings depicted the vicious winds that ripped apart homes and the floodwaters that swamped her town.

She now lives across the Mississippi River from her old neighborhood, and she doesn't think about Katrina or Miss Vera as much as she once did. Yet she still wonders how a major American city let a decaying body remain on a sidewalk for so long.

"It was just inexplicable how that could happen," she said.

Welcome to our web site!

12/16/05 - received the following email from Gail.  This is not the first story that I have heard in the aftermath of Katrina and how Katrina Grinch seems to be at work! If anyone has any other agencies - let Gail know;
Dennis or anyone:
I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. We took in a Katrina evacuee to live in an apartment in our home. One day she told us that she got offered a job in Texas and had to be there in three days. Since she claimed she did not have the money to get there, so we gave her the airfare and loaned her money for her initial rent.(this was of course, after feeding her, gas for her car, parking, etc. during her stay, which we were more thn happy to do)

Shortly after she left we received our phone bill for $5,430, all calls to
Africa. The check she gave us for the money we had loaned her is no good. My long distance service is cut off and we can't get a new business line put in the house because we are now a credit risk. I've been trying to work with the phone company who now offerd a 50% discount, which still leaves $2,700.  Does anyone have any ideas as to how we could get some relief, an agency, a fund...?

11/14/05 -  Every time I think about discontinuing the site a bit of news comes along that provides additional encouragement to leave it up and running!  Below (See the 11/14/05 NEW) is a request for a New Fundraiser.  While NO and MS are out of the daily news eye, the struggle continues.  Check out this new Request.

10/25/05 - Well as everthing - life moves on.  Many sites have shutdown and this site will become somewhat static.  I;ll leave the site up as there is usefull info for some 1000 evacuees and host families here in Mass.

Seems we have alot of flooding to deal with here in Mass., Next to me in Uxbridge Mass., there was (and still is) some dams to go and with the October Rains... Geesh... Nothing Like New Orleans and reading today that the 9th ward has yet flooded again.  Otis AFB has been closed and of the evacuees 135 or so left for other states while the remainder, according to the Governor decided to stay.  They also estimated that another 850 relocated on their own to Mass.

I want to thank the network "members" (some 270 families) for doing what they could.  Although many of us never met one another - thru the emails we exchanged seems we are now a "family" or a "village".  I will update information from time to time so check back every now and then and see if there is a NEW or An Update on this page.

10/12/05 -   The open house project is closing down it's current housing site.  For more information on what the next steps are - go to the FAQ's page.   We thank them for all that they have done and tried to do.  From Shane Messer, Jared Miller, David Reilly
they send along the following;

First of all, from everyone at the incubator group, and all of the foot
volunteers across America who have been part of this effort, we wish to thank the thousands of you who have opened your homes and made this effort possible.  It has been quite an emotional roller-coaster over the past 7 weeks, and at the same time, very worthwhile.

Again, we hope that you will continue to follow our efforts in business and abroad through by joining our MyLife:MyBusiness reader\'s group, but if not, thank you again.  You will receive a final update once our project has been fully transitioned, and from there, we will close this newsletter.

10/11/05 - hasn't been much new to report on in the last few weeks.  However, with the New Bedford Standard Time's Photographer;  Mike we were able to secure photos of our family that evacuated from Lousiana thru Texas as they arrived at New Bedford Regional Airport.  Also pictured are the planes and pilots from the Pilot's association (see the links page for donations) that assisted us in providing free transportation to this family.  As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

9/26/05 Background Checks - FREE.  See the links Page.  I have conversed with the Secretary of State's Office in Ohio as well as the Attorney General's Office regarding BackGround Network Inc., and they confirm that they have been registered in Ohio since 1999 and have no consumer complaints.    This confirms the email from Ryan H. Sherman Vice President Operations that they are a legitimate operation.

9/22/05    Based on recent feedback on housing requests there is a new page (housing requests Ended) that will discontinue requests for a variety of reasons.  So, I ask that if you are researching or a possible offeror and you find the request is no longer valid, please let me know.  Thanks Lynda for your help on several requests.

Also, since several of you have your email's posted and shelter offerings, if an opportunity does occur, PLEASE let us know so we can post the information.  A few of you have had success with college students and I am trying to post this great information and keep up with it.  .

See the contact us page for a few upates.    A diary update is also on the FAQs page as well.

9/21/05  Looks like activity is starting to settle down so I will try and space out these postings.  To that end, take a look in the Contact Us page - Rick has some clothes XL to offer.

Have not heard from anyone regarding the housing request listings that were posted.  Does that mean there are no takers?

You can also read about the arrival of the family of six (see Success Stories) that was posted on the New Bedford Standard Times - Page 1.  The article also contains information about the plight and the days leading up to katrina from Jac.   Jen wants to thank June (site network member) for the Pizza delivery as the last few days have been quite hectic!

Also, Red Cross - Cape (see the Contact Us page) advises that any evacuee that is in Mass and has identification can visit Cape Edwards and partake of all the assistance that is being offered.  At the moment, (unknown for how much longer) it is one stop shopping.  Evacuees can obtain Mass Health Cards, Clothing, Food, Vouchers and all sorts of benefits.  They don't have to be staying at Otis.

On the FAQ Page there is new information on assistance from FEMA and a Victim Assistance Guide that you can download.

9/16/05   First some positive news from the Red Cross.  I received a message that they are creating a group to determine if anyone at OTIS is in need of housing rather than staying at Camp Edwards.  The message also indicated that they will use the web site as a source should the need arise.  At this time, they are not aware of any needs but that can change when they put the task force in place.

At the risk of not jinxing this, I was able to secure transportation (hopefully) for a family of 6 that will be flying from Houston to New Bedford to stay with Jennifer.  Jen can tell you it has been quite a journey these past few days.  Here these folks are with 10 garbage bags of their clothes, an 18" TV and 2 speakers as their remaining possessions.  The unfortunate part is that they may have to leave the last 2 behind!   Then we find out the hotel where they were at would not accept Red Cross Vouchers and evicted them.  ARC put them in another hotel at least till this coming monday.  Hopefully, they will be vac'd out soon.  More to come.... And then Jen Tells me here Gas Stove went on the fritz!    ANYONE have a GAS STOVE they would like to donate?   After all the milions of dollars given to the ARC and everyone else, you think someone could have spared $741.00!    If we pull this over - news at 11.

Also - Don't forget the 2 fundraisers on the Request for Help Page.  If I had my druthers, we'd have our own and put the monies toward transportation costs!  Anyone have a RICH UNCLE ;-)

Mary, u know who u are, is doing a fantastic job with trying to find some places for some evacuees.  One young couple hasn't been smooth sailing yet but we seem to have a positive connection going on another family that Rick is working with Mary on.

Speaking of which there are a number of new requests (see Housing Requests page) for review.  If anyone is interested - let me know and I will send you the direct contact information

Christine hasn't heard from Marion and will be trying to contact him tomorrow.  Still awaitng some info and update on Josh.

Some changes have been made to a number of pages - look for the dates and ARK NE has sent along alot of reference information.

The Yahoo Groups (see contacts page) is growing slowly.  Remember any member can start a subject message so lets get the chatter growing.

I am still digging through the emails but have fallen behind due to these past few days with scrambling for transportation.  So, if I have yet to send you an email (guest book or direct email) have faith as you are all very special people.

Speaking of one from Maisy see the contact us page that essentially asks about how to qualify people.  See the FAQs page for a guide on sponsoring an evacuee.  The document can be downloaded.

9/14/05 - I am still working  on the transportation aspects - Does anyone have contacts with trucking firms -or- airline miles they would be willing to give up?  We have Mary and Rick coordinating on The McNairs, The Cornells are working with The Bergerons, The SubGroup with Christine following up with Marion and finally the Josh from Tulane has started at BU.  I'll try and get some updates on where things are in the next few days.

See the FAQs section for an update from the Open House.  For the coordination teams above, see the News portion on the Success Story Section.

Have you Yahoo'd today?  A forum discussion was created to foster discussions.  A one time only invite was sent out to the network.  If you would like to join the network - go to the Contact Us page and click on the Join picture.  Good thing as I am behind on the emails again!

Had a very pleasant discussion with ARK NE coordinator (Katrina) and will be trying to share as much information as possible.

9/13/05   A short update today.  (It's 4am and I am a bit tuckered out.)  For all of you, I share the same aggravation with you on securing information -  Yesterday, I spent time in discussing with FEMA (in washington) why FEMA is 1. not providing relocation transportation support and 2. centralized background checks.  I dunno they say.  Following this with a similar message from the Red Cross....

One good thing did come from it, at least the website is now online with the Red Cross - Cape (or is suppose to be) for consideration of any evacuees at Otis that may prefer non barracks housing.  There was also some evacuees, like RI, (not many but a few) that were separated due to a background check.  Noone wants to inherit a criminal problem.

See the Request for Help newest addition seeking transportation assistance.

Also you will find a link below (click on the picture) for the USA Freedom site that Presidents Clinton & Bush (#42) have been promoting.

usafreedomcorp.gif

Lastly, we have put together several great familes as a sub group regarding Marion (possible Mississippi evacuee).  What is encouraging is that each one brings a different support piece to the table.  Who say's it doesn't take a village.

- Ed. Note: (9/20/05) Moved the Update on Marion to the Housing Requests and Updates Page

9/12/05   A request (see housing request & update page - Marion) for housing was sent out last evening that was received from Open House.  Todate, three have responded and one had taken the lead on finding out more information.  We will keep this request open till 7 pm today.  So far, there are 3 who are interested.  At that time, I'll put the sponsors together and they can take it from there.

AND DATED 9/12/05 - ANOTHER REQUEST Came In; Mississippi Mother & 3 Children (5 mos girl, 17 yo girl & 14 yo boy) see the Housing Request Page  for more information and contact info.

Also;  Heard from BU Director and they have 300 Tulane Students heading to BU. and speaking of which Deb (see success stories) has a list of books required for this fall semester.  We are trying to see if BU has support resources but in the meantime if you would like to offer a contribution (while this is being investigated) please email Deb directly at graciechar@gmail.com

9/11/05 -  Advisory;   In Rhode Island it was reported by a news agency that a few of the evacuees who went to RI where separated from the main group.  Seems they had some criminal background problems and some were in the sex offense category.   So while trying to do the right thing don't be foolish.   If you do have an evacuee in progress (& it is not already being conducted)  perhaps you can contact your local PD and see under the circumstances if they would be willing to conduct a criminal check for you.  It's worth a shot!

Remember to pause for a moment today and remember the victims from 9-1-1.

Check out the FAQs area for some responses from the open project website on placements!

Thought that I had almost caught up with the emails (see the contact us page)!  However found several in the discard file on hotmail.  How hotmail determines what goes where is shrouded in mystery but my apologies for not responding to you on them or posting the information.  I will get to them by tommorrow.

Remember to send in updates or success stories so we can post for others to give everyone encouragement to stay the course.

Also, called the Central Mass., ARC (american Red Cross) as they had some evacuees that are living in hotels in worcester.  I find it interesting that they were closed and the hours posted are "business as usual".  Perhaps, I am being too critical but I would think under the circumstances for the next few weeks they would not be just on typical business hours.

Was able to contact 5 more of our network by phone who did not have emails online and directed them to the website.  Also, Nancy Robbins (see contact us) sent on the original email to Senator's Kennedy & Kerry with the byline - why assets (such as us) are apparently being overlooked!  Go get 'em Nancy.

9/10/05 - Warning;  The FBI advises that a number of scam websites are popping up "like wildflowers after a spring rain".  They have eliminated upwards to 60 but there are now more than 800.  So., if your zest to help don't be foolish or stupid.  My grandpappy once told me, Trust but Verify.  If you feel there is a scam going on (many of them are from offshore), contact the FBI by click the following picture;

Has anyone from the Boston area made contact with Deb - see the success story and the "next" section below.  I haven't heard anything so if someone can provide Josh a closer location -or- if there has been a change - LET us know!

Received an Email 9/9/05 from State Senator Dick Moore:  So far only about 100 families have come to Otis AFB, so we won't need 250 families unless that changes.  Many of the victims of Katrina are refusing to be relocated because they want to remain close to their families and friends.

The best course of action is to contact the Red Cross.  They are handling donations and volunteers.  Best way is to email them since the phone lines have been overloaded.  Ed Note:  Dick had been with FEMA during the clinton administration and I had hoped for some better insight.

Also;  Chris harringc903@yahoo.com  sent along a link to the National Emergency Resource Center run by homeland security. IT appears to be a place when you can register to provide housing and other services.  Click this link;  https://www.swern.gov/emergency/asset_index.php  and See some of Chri's ideas on the Issues Page.

Another website to consider was sent in by Maria Racca  msmole2@comcast.net Click on this link  http://www.myfamilycanhelp.com/     I went out to it and they have a feature that for $49.95 they can provide a background check thru a 3rd party.  The site does not do a background check.

Background checks can be done by a number of websites that are online.  This question has popped up from several of you.  All you really need is the social security number(s) and it does presume that you are receiving a correct security number.

The contact page has been updated.  That page has a date so you can scroll down and see the most recent updates and thoughts from each and every one of us.  I have dozens more to add and am trying to get to them as quickly as possible.

more to come....

(this last one is a project of MoveOn.org which is a PAC.  However, if you sign up on the housing you are not suppose to be automatically "enrolled" in the PAC - the banner is below so just click on it)
for the first two links, just click on them to go to the site. (to come back to this site, just depress your BACK button)

and another informational site in medford is;

ALSO on the links page are some additional links to resources for families that are currently hosting Katrina Victims in Mass along with a new link to Second Harvest (food bank).

AND Deb (see success story page) needs some help!  And Deb informs us that Josh may wish to stay closer to the School (BU) in BOSTON.  Do we have any Hosts who would be willing to sign-Up?
