from Stan Wolforth we hear: It's fine to have my e-mail listed as part of this group. It is my work e-mail though, so
if it becomes a problem (volume) I'll let you know.
What my family can offer is pretty much limited to the use of our
pop-up camper trailer. It's a nice camper that we use down on Cape Cod for a week each summer. It has a sink, small fridge,
stove and even a heater. It will sleep a family of 4 or 5. It's very clean and in good condition.
My initial thought
was that someone might want to use our camper trailer locally, i.e. for survivors that might be staying with local relatives
who just need more sleeping space. It could also be used at a local campground. I could deliver the trailer to a Boston-area
location and it could be used there for a few months or more. I would prefer for it to stay in Massachusetts and am not sure
how feasible it will be for someone to stay in it during the bitter cold of our New England winter.
Unfortunately we
have a pretty small home and our third child is due in December, so I don't have any space to offer in our house.
If
there is any other way that we can help out then I'd certainly be interested. To contact Stan ==> stan.wohlfarth@bentleypublishers.com .
9/9/05 Hi Dennis- thanks for doing this. I think its a great idea. We have had no word on
takers, but are assuming that anyone contemplating coming this far is likely still sorting out where their family members
are and what they want to do.
9/10/05 some good ideas from Chris Harrington was also thinking of some other
links in support of host families and suriviors to help both the short term and extended stay as reasonable as possible.
I am home this week getting my basement refinished (was originally for my son to move into but if I get called as a host
home I will offer it to the family so they can have some privacy. With that said I am up to my eyeballs in work before going
back to my FT job on Monday.
In a couple days I will send you another email to see what you think of the ideas and if we can get them posted. Ideas
such as Ride Share - I would imagine once the folks are placed here they may need to be driven to doctor appointments,
unemployement office, job hunting, etc and won't have use of a car.Maybe we can network a list of folks to call upon during
slotted times to provide rides. A couple other quick ideas is to look into Big Brother Big Sister orgainization for the
kids, post local links to organizations who are willing to reserve jobs for Katrina survivors, links to local parishes and
volunteer opportunities for the survivors to get involved with so they feel like they can give back at some point, etc. I've
always have a million ideas, some feasible, some pipe dreams. Gotta get back to work.
9/8/05 From Lois Williamson in response to Danielle (see success story page): You are wise to
be concerned and cautious of the press....after having published an ad for housing on craigslist- I was caught offguard by
several reporters...first from a local newspaper that I thought was a simple conversation about my prospective, why we offered
to be a host family,etc... but, to my surprise~ from there it went to off to press at the Herald and
then quite frankly ...took on a life of its own! The following morning, I received a wake up phone call...aVERY EARLY ...(ie 6:50am) phone call from WBZ radio. Half asleep I engaged in
a conversation and next thing...I was on the radio before even having had my morning
coffee! It then journeyed on to Channel 7- live news with the news truck et all...and once they left...I thought we could
breathe a sigh of relief...yet as we settled in for a peaceful evening after a very busy day...the truck was back as was the
bright lighting for the 11:00 pm broadcast from outside our front door. So...as I said, you are wise to be cautious. Quite
frankly, we were spinning before we knew what had happened! I am much wiser now... as is my husband and
my daughters. I also agree wholeheartedly....any families having just lived through the hurricane
along with all of the sorrow and stress that has brought on- needs some time to regroup and heal before being barraged by
the press.
Best wishes Danielle to you , your family and to the family you are hosting.
God Bless each and everyone of
you!

9/9/05 - Christine Bentley had an interestiing question; I wondered what restrictions the government
may take as to how many you may house and particularly with children----what kind of bed situation is acceptable?
I know this sounds ludicrous---but after listening to some of the government officials, I do wonder if they will place restrictions....
Ed Note: I just saw one family who added another 53 evacuees into it! I am sure there
can be some limitations. I suspect that they will be wide and varied from a Federal, State and especially Local perspectives
(i.e. board of healths). Anyone have any other insights?
